The nine-day reign of Henry VII’s great-granddaughter ended with one of English history’s notorious beheadings when Mary Tudor’s supporters claimed the crown in 1553. This co-production of Odyssey Opera and Boston Modern Orchestra Project brings the poignant story of Lady Jane Grey to Boston audiences in a world premiere by Arnold Rosner, a composer whose work is both genre busting and intensely emotional.

Saint- Saëns's Henry VIII Odyssey Opera

Sept 21, 7:30pm
@ Jordan Hall, Boston
tickets at odysseyopera.org
Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor

A dangerous monarch is determined to divorce Catherine of Aragon in favor of the beautiful, ambitious Anne Boleyn. This is one of history’s most infamous love triangles and the beginning of the “King’s Troubles”. Saint-Saens’s score brilliantly invokes an early Renaissance sensibility while remaining firmly rooted in the French grand opera tradition. Sweeping vocal melodies and rich orchestral writing bring this compelling tragedy to life.

Queen Mary I is infatuated with the Scottish adventurer Fenimoore, who is in love with Clotilde, who in turn loves Ernesto. Romance and political intrigue are treacherous bedfellows in this opera based on Victor Hugo’s play about Mary Tudor. A remarkable and largely forgotten opera, its expressive vocal characterization paints an unforgettable portrait of a Queen and the repercussions of her indulgence in an unwise love.

Offenbach's La Belle Hélène, Odyssey Opera

June 14, 7:30pm and June 16, 2:00pm

@ Huntington Theatre, Boston
tickets at odysseyopera.org
Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor

An irresistible opéra bouffe with a brilliant libretto, La belle Hélène wickedly parodies the well-known legend of Helen’s elopement with Paris. The dashing Prince of Troy wins Helen’s love with the assistance of a cunning oracle who outwits her husband and an assortment of royal Grecian heroes. With sparkling orchestral panache, some of Offenbach’s best-loved melodies, and an epidemic of marital infidelity, it’s no wonder this opera received over 700 performances when it premiered! Fans of our 2017 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience, praised by The Boston Globe as, “a tour-de-force,” will be delighted as Odyssey Opera continues their exploration of comedic masterpieces from the nineteenth century.

An evening of art and music to help us remember the mission of our Savior, beginning with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, highlighting his suffering and ending with his resurrection. Other featured selections include movements from Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, some traditional celtic songs and other choral works.
We will have a special display of Easter themed artwork and refreshments following the musical presentation. This production is open and free to the public.

MacMillan St Luke Passion

Sun April 14th, 4:00pm
@ Trinity Lutheran Church, Worcester, MA
Tickets at  http://tinyurl.com/trinitystluke
Singer

This performance is the third installment of Trinity’s annual performances of a musical passion. MacMillan’s presentation of the Gospel of Luke text is a gripping, direct, and powerful telling of the crucifixion story. Void of the soloists and arias seen in Bach’s settings, MacMillan sets the texts of Jesus in the innocent voices of the children and provides reflective moments by bookending the passion narrative with texts from the Annunciation and Resurrection / Ascension. A preconcert talk about living Scottish composer James MacMillan and his  “St. Luke Passion” will be given by Joshua W. Rohde, held a week before the performance on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 12:00pm, Trinity Lutheran Church.

Strauss's Die ägyptische Helena, Odyssey Opera

April 19, 7:30pm

@ Jordan Hall, Boston
tickets at odysseyopera.org
Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor

In Die ägyptische Helena, librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal asks “What lay between that dreadful night and the complete reconciliation that followed? What can have helped rebuild this marriage as a true companionship?” Richard Strauss’s two-act opera is both an intimate and emotional story about Helen and her husband Menelas. Ten years after Helen left her husband to be with Paris, this opera imagines life after her return home. Or was it a phantom who went to Troy, leaving the beautiful Helen sleeping in Sparta all along? With goddesses, sorceresses, and elves to help spin the tale, will Menelas find forgiveness in his heart for his wife? Come experience this lush and dramatic work, a rare offering by one of opera’s greatest creative teams.

@ Huntington Theater, Boston
tickets at odysseyopera.org

In ancient Greece, Paris sought the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen. Their elopement to Troy resulted in the Trojan War, a tale that has inspired countless artists. Paride ed Elena tells the story of their first meeting to their flight from Sparta and centers on three characters: Paris, Helen, and Cupid who is instrumental in persuading Helen to choose love over duty. But when the Gods intervene in the lives of mortals, can there be a happy ending? After the resounding success of Ezio in 2016, Odyssey Opera resurrects another of Gluck’s lost gems. Featuring a unique cast of all sopranos in this, the third of Gluck’s “reform” operas.
